Fun Fact: The celebration of the winter solstice—the longest night of the year—is thought to have started in Germany. The celebration, which involved burning a log, was thought to ensure protection for the family in the new year. From Germany, the tradition spread to other European countries. The tradition of eating a log cake (Bûche de Noël) on Christmas Eve was most likely started by the French in the late 19th century.
